Windsor campaign group calls to save Alexandra Gardens
CALLS for development decisions on Alexandra Gardens to be postponed for residents to have a say after coronavirus pandemic.
The Windsor Liberal Democrats are urging the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council (RBWM) and the Royal Borough Property Company to delay any progress developing the coach and car parks at Alexandra Gardens until the current health emergency passes.
The campaign group called Save Alexandra Gardens 2020, which is led by the Lib Dems, accused Tory cabinet members for having secret meetings on plans to develop the gardens.
They also said Windsorians should have a say in any future decisions, but it is not possible now due to people having to self-isolate.
Scrapped plans in 2008 to build a 600-700 space multi-storey car park at the gardens were heavily rejected by locals.
However, the council said they have no plans to develop Alexandra Gardens.
A spokeswoman from RBWM said: "The council will in the future be looking at proposals for the coach park and car park with the aim to improve this part of Windsor.
"There will be extensive consultation with the public on any detailed proposals that come forward in the future."
Julian Tisi, Lib Dem activist and helping lead the campaign, said:
"We know the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead is struggling with big debts and deficits and that the site at Alexandra Gardens is potentially worth a lot of money, however Alexandra Gardens is an exceptionally important site to the people of Windsor.
We believe that any decision about developing the coach and car park needs to be taken in public. For Windsor people to have a proper say about what happens at Alexandra Gardens, this decision must be delayed until people can all join in."
