Campaigners have organised a protest for Sunday in Windsor over plans to cut down a landmark cedar oak tree.

The 200-year-old cedar Lebanon trunk in St Leonard's Road is facing the axe by the Royal Borough, due to costly insurance difficulties with nearby houses.

It was set to be taken down tomorrow, but after a public outcry it has been put on hold while council officers investigate ways of saving it.

Campaigns have been launched by furious residents, who have started an online petition on social networking website Twitter - entitled 'Save Our Cedar'.

And a Facebook group 'Save the Windsor Cedar Tree' has been set up with 271 members signing up as of today.

Protesters are to gather on Sunday next to the tree, which is situated near the Trooper Inn pub, to vent their anger at the plans

Council leader David Burbage, has also thrown his weight behind its saviour, and wants to see it saved if possible and added: "I have asked for nothing to happen until my explicit authorisation."
