Roundabout Trial Drags on

Ever feel you're going round in circles?

If you're stuck at the 'temporary' roundabouts at the junction of Clarence Road, Dedworth Road, Hatch Lane and Parsonage Lane, it might well feel that way. We are certainly feeling frustrated with the lack of progress at this junction, despite our efforts.

Hasn't the trial dragged on long enough?

It was due to end in March but was extended by the prevous administration, just before the election. The new finish date was set for the end of May but that has been and gone. Residents are, quite rightly, asking what is happening now?

Back in May, Karen and I met with officers to discuss how things would progress once the consulation and trial ended. We were advised that a 'technical note' which combined all the safety and technical information, was being prepared and would be sent to the Lead Member for transport, Clr Johnson to review. He confirmed that this would also be shared with ward members. Unfortunately we are still waiting to see this document.

Meanwhile, the temporary traffic lights keep running down. They are battery operated and only last a maximum of 5 days, less if used more often. Melvyn Lambert Plant will come out the same day to fix them and we're grateful to residents who have reported them to us or directly. If you notice the lights are not working, please do let us know.

The junction is increasingly chaotic as telecommunications cabling is being laid in the area. This has brought more street clutter and has made the whole place a dangerous slalom for pedestrians dodging machinery, barriers and trenches. Pedestrian and cyclist safety has always been our biggest concern at this junction and we continue to worry that an accident is just waiting to occur.

We will continue to push to see the reports on this junction and do our best to ensure the final arrangements are safe for the school children, elderly people and cyclists who use this junction daily, as well as the drivers who want a smooth journey.

Please do get in touch if you would like to discuss this or any other issue in Clewer East.
