Overspend on waste at Royal Borough weighing in at more than £500,000
AN OVERSPEND of more than £500,000 has been forecast for managing waste at the council - more than 3.5% of its directorate's entire budget.
The cost of waste in the Royal Borough is set to come in at £580,000 over budget when final financial figures for the year 2013/14 are collated later this month.
The operations directorate will be running at a projected overspend of £152,000 on a £16.2m budget due to the large waste spend.
Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Thursday last week Cllr Carwyn Cox, cabinet member for environmental services, said: "There is work being done and there will be a paper coming to cabinet in June in response to the waste issue.
"There is progress being made by officers trying to reduce the overspend such as mitigating the effect of food waste.
"I am confident we are making progress."
It is not believed the overspend will have a big affect on the council's finances with an underspend for the year 2013/14 currently predicted at around £1m.
Final figures for the year will be presented at the next meeting of the borough's cabinet on May 29.
