Labour are in third place nationally

The ICM poll for The Sunday Telegraph puts the Liberal Democrats in second place for the first time in the party's 21 year history.

Asked who they would support in a general election, only 22 per cent of voters back Labour, with the party slumping behind the Conservatives on 40 per cent and the Liberal Democrats who are on 25 per cent.

Asked about the European elections Labour was again in third place with 17% behind the Conservatives on 29% and The Liberal Democrats on 20%. UKIP with 10% was beaten into fifth place by the Greens who polled 11%.

"These polls are reportedly the worst for Labour since the SDP / Liberal Alliance victory at Greenwich in 1987 - they show people really want the new kind of politics that Liberal Democrats were set up to create," says Windsor Lib Dems' Julian Tisi.
