LIBERAL DEMOCRAT GEORGE FUSSEY, SAYS “I CAN LIVE COMFORTABLY ON MP’s PAY”
The Liberal Democrats' parliamentary candidate for Windsor in 2015 has expressed bemusement at recent comments by the Conservative MP in Windsor suggesting MPs salaries should be raised to as much as £225,000.
"In our local election campaign Liberal Democrats have promised to cut councillors' allowances in the Royal Borough in half.
It's vitally important MPs don't lose touch with the people they represent. It's a privilege to serve residents and not a right.
I know I can live comfortably off the current MPs salary and will oppose any plans to raise MPs salaries to the ludicrous levels suggested by some Conservatives.."
said the Lib Dems Parliamentary Candidate George Fussey.
Local Liberal Democrats have consistently fought against Conservative plans to line their own pockets at the public's expense, by increasing the allowances and benefits paid to councillors. Whilst we have no problem with councillors being recompensed for the reasonable expenses they incur as councillors, being a councillor should not be seen as a job.
"The Conservatives' first priority in taking control of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in 2007 was to nearly double their councillors' allowances.
Now Windsor's Conservative MP is calling for his wages to be quadrupled.
We believe people should stand for election to serve their community, not line their pockets, which is why Lib Dems across the Royal Borough are promising to make cutting councillors' allowances in one of our first actions if we win."
Says Julian Tisi, who is standing for the Liberal Democrats in this year's local elections.
