In a series of local Government By-elections over the last few weeks the Liberal Democrats have inflicted one defeat after another on the Conservatives putting pay to any idea of a Conservative walk over in the forth coming General Election.

Top headline victory was in Bedford where the Conservatives came Second to Lib Dem Dave Hodgson in a by-election for the Directly Elected Mayor. Labour were pushed into fifth place in the election held on the 15th October.

In Norfolk Lib Dems in Wroxham are celebrating a 37% swing from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats which saw the Lib Dems gain 62% of the vote with Conservatives a distant second on 22% and Labour fourth on just 3%.

Meanwhile in Worcestershire's Wychavon District Council the Lib Dems took Droitwych South West from the Conservatives.

Recent Lib Dem success has been picked up by the Independent newspaper, under the headline, 'No Brown bounce as Lib Dems surge'. The paper reported that in in recent by-elections contested by the three main parties the Lib Dems had come first taking 36% of all votes cast, followed by the Conservatives on 32% and Labour on 21%.

"Where the test is a real election, with real votes in the ballot box, it is the Lib Dems who are leading." says Windsor Lib Dem's Julian Tisi.
