Lib Dems Promise to Slash Councillors Allowances if Elected

14 Apr 2011

One of the first actions of the current Conservative Council elected in May 2007 was to give themselves a massive 91% rise in allowances. Liberal Democrats in the Royal Borough have promised massive cuts to councillors allowances if they win control of the Royal Borough in May.

The Liberal Democrats have promised that within 100 days of taking control of the council, if they win in May, they will cut baisc councillors allowances from £7,200 a year to £4,500, with proportionate cuts in other councillors' allowances.

"The giant rise in allowances introduced by the Conservatives in 2007, broke the trust placed in them by the electorate," says local Lib Dem Pat Gare.

Since the Conservatives' 91% pay rise lots of services which cost less than the cost of the allowance rise have been cut by the Conservative Council.
