Leadership challenge narrowly defeated in Royal Borough Tory party
Claims of unrest by opposition
CLAIMS of 'ruptures' in the Royal Borough Tory Party erupted after a leadership challenge was defeated by just five votes.
The Observer exclusively revealed last week that Bisham and Cookham councillor Richard Kellaway was plotting a challenge to overthrow Cllr David Burbage with a vote due to be held at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Conservative Group annual general meeting on Monday.
The Observer understands the outcome of the vote of the 47 Royal Borough Conservative councillors stood at 26-21 in favour of Cllr Burbage.
It is understood the reason for Cllr Kellaway's support is that many Tory councillors feel disillusioned with their lack of input in the decision-making process of the council where 10 councillors sit in the cabinet - the main decision-making body.
Opposition Cllr Lynne Jones, of the Old Windsor Residents' Association, said: "The fact it went so close is a statement. It shows there are ruptures in the rank and file. There are people within the party who are unhappy at not being able to represent their constituents."
Liberal Democrat Cllr George Fussey said: "It says something about the way in which the party is being managed as well as the council."
Cllr Burbage was unavailable for comment on the matter. Cllr Simon Dudley, deputy council leader, said he did not want to comment on the outcome of the meeting and discussions held.
Cllr Burbage has served as leader of the Conservative party since 2003 and leader of the council since 2007 when the party won that year's election. Cllr Kellaway did not wish to comment.
