'Horrendous' traffic conditions at Legoland Windsor criticised by councillors

The theme park, in Winkfield Road, Windsor, came under fire at yesterday's Windsor Town Forum meeting after a two-day experiment by the borough's traffic and road department failed to tackle the problem.
Tony Carr, the borough's traffic and road safety manager, gave a presentation at the meeting referring to the trial which stopped vehicles from converging on Winkfield Road from different directions on the weekend of August 31-September 1.
Cars were banned from turning right into it from Imperial Road or Clewer Hill Road - removing the need for the double traffic lights that usually add to the hold-ups.
Mr Carr said: "We monitored the traffic and compared it with the weekend of August 17-18 and the results showed the traffic flows for the trial weekend were 10 per cent higher than the comparative weekend.
"Queues were similar in both cases with traffic moving slowly all the way down the road, there were no significant change in times down the corridor from the M4 to Legoland.
He added there been had negative feedback from the public regarding the trial but they had heard nothing from Legoland.
Cllr Cynthia Endacott (Ind, Clewer North) was caught up in the queues while taking her grandchildren for a day out at the theme park.
She said: "The traffic was absolutely horrendous and there were no signs to warn you about the road changes, so I was pretty cross.
"Something has got to be done because the problem is not going to go away and I am annoyed with Legoland for not entering into a dialogue with other people."
Cllr Jesse Grey (Con, Datchet), said: "I was in a queue for three hours with my grandchildren on the way to Legoland and it was not pleasant.
"By the time we got there, the guy in the car park said we were wasting our time because the queue for rides was so big so we decided to leave.
"I am concerned for our residents and something very serious has to be brought to the attention of the Legoland management."
Councillors' suggestions to ease the problem included creating a park and ride scheme on the M4 corridor and for entrance times to be staggered throughout the day.
