General Election Result 2015 Confrims need for Electoral Reform
We now need Proportional Representation, that's the clear message of the General Election result.
Between them the Liberal Democrats, UKIP and the Greens clocked up a quarter of the vote on Thursday 7th May, but were rewarded with just 10 seats. The choice in the AV referendum in 2011was a choice between the Conservative's first and second choice of unfair voting system. Nationally we've now got a right wing Conservative government again, despite less than a quarter of the electorate as a whole voting for it. Locally strong strands of local political opinoin are also unrepresented in the council chamber. This problem has infact been with us for nearly 30 years, as far back as the 1980's the Liberal Alliance was polling as strongly as Labour in England, but getting less than a tenth of the number of seats. Support for proportional representation has come from some unexpected sources, with well known right-wing Conservative Euro MP, Daniel Hannan, a favourite amongst local Conservatives, calling for proportional representation in an article he wrote for website, Conservative Home, in April. If you agree with the Lib Dems, Greens, UKIP and Daniel Hannan that we need Proportional Representation, then consider supporting the Electoral Reform Society and Unlock Democracy's electoral reform petition here: Read More: | |
