The Conservatives have refused to guarantee the Connexions youth advice & careers service's future

Following the meeting of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council on Wednesday 28th September 2010 it has become apparent that Conservative Cuts to the Connexions Advice Service will see the Council offer the bare minimum service required by law.

A Liberal Democrat motion put to the council to protect the Connexions Service was severely amended by Conservative members in order to restrict the council to merely providing the minimum required.

Cllr Cynthia Pitteway, the Liberal Democrat lead on education said,

"Knowing all the possibilities open to youth - vocational diplomas, apprenticeships, traditional academic qualifications-has never been more important. To navigate through all these opportunities, to find the best option for you to follow, is not easy. This is why support has been given to professionals who can help youngsters by suggesting which path is most likely to help them realise their full potential."

In tough economic times this service can be seen as an easy one to cut.

Cllr Cynthia Pitteway added,

"In an increasing knowledge based economy it is more important than ever that the service is maintained. Effective and independent information, advice and guidance will help raise aspirations and encourage the acquisition of economically valuable skills, which are so necessary to our nation's future."
