Clewer East Catch-Up: May

5 Jun 2019

A month ago, we found out that we had been elected as your councillors for Clewer East. It was almost 6am by the time the result was announced and we'd been up for 24hours by that point! Thank you to everyone who voted for us to represent you on the council. We feel exceptionally privileged.

Training and Events

Wow! What a first month in office! May has been packed with induction meetings, training on a range of aspects of our role including planning, licensing and safeguarding plus meeting all the officers who do a fantastic job keeping all the wheels turning at the council. These skilled and dedicated officers work within the framework or policy set by councillors and we expect that this will cause some lively debate over the next four years!

The first official event we were invited to was a very special one; the farewell parade of the Household Cavalry with an address by HRH Princess Anne. Shortly after that we attended the Annual Council meeting where the mayor, deputy mayor, leader, cabinet, meeting chairs and representatives are confirmed.

This is more of a ceremonial meeting, but opposition councillors felt it was important to ask for a named vote over the leadership. In the end, all the Conservative councillors voted for Simon Dudley; 17 opposition councillors voted against; one independent abstained. It was a disappointing yet predictable outcome, but we're still hopeful that some of the more independently minded Conservative councillors will make a stand and do what's right for their residents.

Ward Work

Back to ward business, and our emails and phones have been buzzing with residents getting in touch about a range of issues. This month we have helped a resident get an abandoned car removed, started judging Garden in Bloom and reported issues with our pavements and roads. We've also met with opposition councillors to discuss ways forward on issues that overlap our neighbouring wards.

We've had plenty of casework, which came up during the election, to follow up. This has meant meeting with officers for highways to get an update on the roundabout trial. Technical and safety information has now been released and we will be discussing this with the Lead member for transport to ensure the best solution for this junction.

Parking issues continue to frustrate residents in our ward and beyond and we have meetings arranged to discuss this with officers and try to find solutions and will of course feed back once we have more information.

Moving Forward

We have both been meeting residents across the ward and are keen to start a regular surgery. Could you suggest a location in the ward?
