A campaign for a memorial paying homage to a Windsor man who designed the famous Hawker Hurricane aircraft is set to launch tomorrow.

Appeal organisers are trying to raise £60,000 to honour aeronautical engineer Sir Sydney Camm, who designed 52 aircraft during his distinguished career and was born and bred in the town.

Plans are to place a full size replica of a Hurricane in Alexandra Gardens on September 18 next year, to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which the fighter plane played a pivotal role in.

The clock is ticking for campaigners though, as £35,000 is needed by April so the aircraft can be bought while the remainder of the cash is needed by August.

The Sir Sydney Camm Commemorative Society came up with the appeal, which is being run by Artique Gallery Publishing in Eton.

It will launch at 1pm tomorrow at the High Street-based showroom, along with an exhibition to be opened by Royal Borough Mayor, Jesse Grey.
