Backlash at plans to fell 'glorious' 200-year-old cedar oak tree
A 'glorious' cedar oak tree in the heart of central Windsor is facing the axe, to the horror of residents.
Karen Frost, of Osbourne Road, is up in arms about the Royal Borough's decision to fell the tree, thought to be 200-years-old and located opposite the Trooper Inn Pub, in St Leonard's Road.
The tree is under threat because of insurance difficulties caused by its proximity to properties in the road, which the council said is causing some to subside.
The Royal Borough says it could end up costing £150,000 in claims.
After a backlash, the council has put the axing on hold - but a white notice has been slapped on the trunk saying it is causing a 'nuisance' and it was set to be taken down tomorrow.
Mrs Frost, 47, said: "I am more than disappointed as it is most beautiful thing you have seen."
A campaign has been launched by furious residents, who have started an online petition on social networking website Twitter - entitled Save Our Cedar.
A Royal Borough spokesman said they have been advised by their loss adjusters Ufton Associates to remove it, but are doing all they can to save the cedar.
She added: "Underpinning of the houses could be necessary if the tree remains, which would result in a substantial claim against the council."
