Anger over Legoland traffic experiment
A two day experiment aimed at easing the notorious Legoland traffic jams left weekend drivers bewildered and furious.
Father-of-two Curt Hopkins, 45, of Hermitage Lane, Windsor says the experiment which saw the double traffic lights turned off at the notorious double junction of Clewer Hill Road, Imperial Road and St Leonards Road merely caused chaos.
He said: "All it achieved was to bring a farcical end to a summer of traffic woe.
"Legoland is totally in the wrong place and the council has been too willing to allow it to expand endlessly.
"I was there when councillors passed the plan for a hotel there with almost no debate.
"The council needs to show some backbone or it will end up with residents manning the barracks and blocking the road."
The weekend's experiment tried to create a free flow of traffic towards Legoland by stopping vehicles from converging on it from different directions. Cars were banned from turning right into Winkfield Road from Imperial Road or Clewer Hill Road - removing the need for the double traffic lights that usually add to the holiday hold-ups.
Cllr Cynthia Endacott (Independent, Clewer North) got caught up when she headed for Legoland with her family.
She said: "It was utter chaos. Motorists were attempting to do U-turns in Imperial Road when they found they could not turn right. What was most annoying is that people had not been properly warned or informed in advance."
Cllr Geoff Hill, the Royal Borough's cabinet member for roads, said the trial had been a one off.
He said: "We will not be repeating this trial until the effects have been fully evaluated alongside other measures. However, we remained determined to find a long term solution to this problem."
