Campaigns - Give Residents Back Proper Parking Discounts
After a two year campaign from the Lib Dems to get back a resident parking discount, it is finally being reintroduced.
Thank you to all the residents who have supported our campaign.
Two years ago the Conservative council removed the residents' parking discount that operated through the Advantage Card.
At the time the council admitted that previous spending decisions and a failure to meet previous savings and income target had led to this financial meltdown. Lib Dems had been warning of this spendthrift crisis over the preceding few years but had sadly been ignored.
After two years of Lib Dem campaigning, the Conservatives have been forced to bring back a residents' parking discount
However the scheme proposed is very poor. In Windsor only Alma Road and Alexandra Gardens Car Parks are in the recommended scheme.
The Victoria Street Car Park, in the heart of town, outside which the Conservative council leader filmed a video announcing his not-so-super-duper parking discount, is not in the recommended scheme!
To add insult to injury, the scheme has been made unneccesarily complicated:
- You have to use the Ringo Phone App
- You will need to register in advance
- You have to complete a separate application form for each car park you want to use the discount at
Lib Dem View
The council, like others in tourist areas, uses parking charges in Windsor as a "tourist tax" to raise money from visitors. Without a proper residents' discount high parking charges make shopping in Windsor expensive for local people, therby further adding to the destruction already visited on Windsor's Town Centre by this council. The council seems more focussed on its own priorities, than those of residents. We need a proper scheme to save our shops, treat residents fairly and protect Windsor as a vibrant community.
The Lib Dems will continue to campaign for a proper residents' discount scheme.
