The Windsor Liberal Club: The Acre

July 30, 2016 11:10 PM

The AcreMichael Caine reputedly said, "Not a lot of people know that." Now, there are many things of which this could be said but high on list would be the Windsor Liberal Club - or The Acre as it is also known.

There has been a Liberal Club in Windsor for over one hundred and twenty seven years and for much of that time it has been at 4 Victoria Street, where it is currently This site is opposite the barracks and in front of Bachelor's Acre.

The aims of the club, as set out in its constitution, are twofold. One function is to act as a social club for the local community and the other is to "secure the return of a Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament ..... as well as local Councillors for RBWM."

Originally the club was just for registered members of the Liberal Party which in those days regularly formed the Government and provided the Prime Minister. Nowadays users of the Club do not have to have any fixed political allegiance, though the building still hosts the active wing of the local party and it's executive meets there regularly - thus carrying on a long tradition.

A few years ago the club took advantage of new licensing laws so that we now trade as The Acre public house, as well as a members' club. Members enjoy discounted prices at the bar which are among the lowest in Windsor and they also receive a number of other benefits.

Very few local parties have the advantage of such a building for their own use and while the first floor is rented out as a gym the club has an excellent basement facility which can be hired for functions.
