Conservative Stealth Taxes Dwarf Council Tax Savings in the Royal Borough9.29.44am GMT Thu 25th Feb 2010
Liberal Democrats in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead have welcomed the recent reduction in council tax, however they do not welcome the extra £17.4 million in Stealth Tax fees and charges that the Conservatives are taking form residents purses and wallets. Cllr Simon Werner, leader of the Lib Dems at the Royal Borough said "We calculate that the Conservatives are Taking an average of £246 per year per household in extra stealth taxes. This massive increase in tax under the Tories dwarfs their modest council tax reduction. It makes the cut in council tax seem like loose change which is what it will be for many." Cllr Bruce Adams , Lib Dem finance spokesman said "For those on the lowest council tax band, the cut in council tax amounts to just 8p per day. What can you buy for 8p these days?" "Even if you want to try to save the pennies up, you won't be able to go for long before having to use the cash to pay for the Tory stealth taxes. There are numerous higher charges imposed by this Tory administration in their years in charge such as parking or homecare." Cllr Simon Werner concluded "We could however agree with the Tory on one thing. It is a more for less budget. More money for the Conservative council and less fairness for residents!"
