More than a thousand bus users say no to relocation

MORE than 1,000 bus users have signed a petition opposing plans to relocate a bus stop in Windsor town centre.

The document against proposals to move the bus stop in Peascod Street to Charles Street as part of a wider plan to fully pedestrianise Peascod Street has been presented to the council by Cllr Cynthia Endacott.

The controversial issue was once again the hot topic of heated debate at a Windsor Town Forum meeting on Thursday last week.

Mrs Endacott, said: "The signatures on the petition against moving the bus stop are purely bus users. There are over 1,000 signatures which shows the strength of feeling of bus users. It is time people start listening to the bus users."

Strong opposition was also voiced by chairman of West Windsor residents' association John Holdstock.

He said: "Residents living in West Windsor and others using the buses that stop at the bottom of Peascod Street are strongly opposed to the proposal to relocate that bus stop.

"This proposal would provide a significantly less convenient access to buses, particularly for the physically infirm."

However, chairman of the forum Cllr Tom Bursnall, said: "I am a keen supporter and think it would be the right thing. I have walked to and from the bus stops and keep coming to about 45 seconds distance at a slow walk.

"Visitors to these shops want to know they can walk around with the safety of not being run over by a bus."

The proposal has also been backed by the Windsor Chamber of Commerce and chairman David Jessey said he believed pedestrianisation would make the area 'a much more pleasant place to shop'.

The Royal Borough has enlisted the help of a independent company for a consultation with local businesses and residents.

The closing date is Friday, November 30.
